Neighborhood Caretakers

Annually, since 1980, BRI has enlisted the help of volunteers, neighborhood residents and corporations to renovate entire city blocks and bring neighbors together.

BRI selects neighborhoods based on income and levels of homeownership, then lines-up both volunteers and resources. The organization then leads teams in the completion of both major and minor projects on the selected block over the course of one week. BRI carries out major projects on behalf of the neighborhood’s residents—from the pouring of concrete sidewalks and driveways, to landscaping, to the installation of new roofs and fences and the painting of patios.

Leveraging a Community Development Grant from Adams County, BRI secured enough supplies and materials to lead volunteer teams in painting and re-roofing, the installation of new siding and fences, and extensive landscaping improvements all FREE of charge to residences in unincorporated Adams County neighborhoods. NCP: In 2006 and 2005, we went into an unincorporated Adams County neighborhood selected by both BRI and Adams County officials and have invited back in 2007. In June of 2006, during a two-week period, eighteen (18) homes were renovated in a two-block radius in the Goat Hill (approximately 65th and Federal Blvd.) neighborhood. We also went into the City of Brighton were another 26 homes were renovated, for a total of forty-four (44) families assisted through the NCP. The NCP is not budget driven; therefore, if funding is not received, we cannot provide this service to the communities, as was the case in 2004.

Since 1980, Brothers has renovated more than 34 neighborhoods in several metro area counties.
